An Interview with the directors Nikolett Fábián, Sadeq Es-haqi and Louise Bernard Pallas

Meet the filmmakers: RESTING FOG, JOUISSANCE, COLD CHEEKS

Describe your film in three words.

Nikolett Fábián: Remembrance , Distortion, Remission.

Sadeq Es-haqi: Cold, sad, but romantic!

Louise Bernard Pallas: Waves, love, eternity.

If your film was an animal, what animal would it be?

Nikolett Fábián: A school of fish.

Sadeq Es-haqi: I really love dogs, so I’d choose to be a dog!

Louise Bernard Pallas: A ladybird.

What was the most memorable thing that happened while shooting this movie?

Nikolett Fábián: I visited local spas to gather inspiration and references. The calm and meditative atmosphere of the spas meant a lot to me.

Sadeq Es-haqi: As this was a super-low-budget student short film, everyone in this movie was a friend at the university or we knew each other from other communities. Everyone was on the set giving it their all, and everyone helped us to prepare the sets in any way they could. Most of the crew did not ask for money, because we all wanted to make a film together. All of us understood it was a group project. I’m really grateful for them and wish to thank them here.

Louise Bernard Pallas: The night before the first day of shooting, I had to take the lead actress to the emergency room.

What is your favorite movie quote of all time?

Nikolett Fábián: “I see what happens. If anyone spoke about the real things, then I would listen. If those words mean anything, I will be next to you. I wish you’d convince me that it is worth it. But no one does.”  — I AM SIMON (2009)

Sadeq Es-haqi: I prefer this quote from WHIPLASH (2014): “I’d rather die drunk, broke at 34, and have people at a dinner table talk about me than live to be rich and sober at 90 and nobody remembered who I was.”

Louise Bernard Pallas: “It was ecstasy!” — Jonas Mekas in AS I WAS MOVING AHEAD OCCASIONALLY I SAW BRIEF GLIMPSES OF BEAUTY (2000).

Which filmmaker would you like to have a beer with?

Nikolett Fábián: Hmm... Paolo Sorrentino.

Sadeq Es-haqi: Yorgos Lanthimos, of course!

Louise Bernard Pallas:  David Lynch.

What was the first film you remember watching at a movie theater?

Nikolett Fábián: HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE (2001) (I saw very little of the film because my mum covered my eyes a lot.) :D

Sadeq Es-haqi: I don’t remember the first one, but I can remember one that had a great impact on me, such that I really identified with the main character. I was an Iranian movie directed by Parviz Shahbazi called DARBAND – TRAPPED (2013), and I really loved it.

Louise Bernard Pallas: MONSIEUR HULOT’S HOLIDAY (1953) by Jacques Tati.

If you weren’t a filmmaker, you’d be a...?

Nikolett Fábián: Maybe an interior designer or an aerial artist :D

Sadeq Es-haqi: A 3-D artist making NFTs!

Louise Bernard Pallas: Dancer or a psychoanalyst, but actually I am a director of photography.

What is your favorite song to dance to?

Nikolett Fábián: "Bombay" by El Guincho for a real party and "Nightlife" by Sébastien Schuller for a melancholic party.

Sadeq Es-haqi: "The Chase" by Emmit Fenn.

Louise Bernard Pallas: I have too many. This morning I danced to "Marcia Baïla" by Les Rita Mitsouko.

Is this your first visit to Munich? What do you expect from the city and the festival?

Nikolett Fábián: Meeting great creators, sharing our love for cinema, and hopefully drinking a lot of the famous German beer.

Sadeq Es-haqi: Yes, and it’s my first trip to Europe. It’s great that my first time is with Filmschoolfest Munich. I’d really like to meet and communicate with young filmmakers at the festival because I’m sure that all of them are the talented ones and I’m meeting the best filmmakers of the future. The other intention is to stay in touch with this community for future collaborations.

Louise Bernard Pallas: I have already been to Munich. It was in 2020 for a week of night shoots with the HFF, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am very happy to have the opportunity to show my film in Germany. I hope to discover some beautiful shorts and meet other filmmakers to share some ideas or feelings about our films.
