In West Wales, Emma, nine, takes care of the home while her single mother Kate subjugates herself to the needs of her boyfriend. As Emma’s older brother and his friend walk home he attempts to impress his friend with acts of rebellion. When they get home the boy witnesses Kate having sex and decides to use Emma as a means to explore the adult sexual world. In so doing he forces her brother into silent complicity and Emma alone into a world she is too young to understand.
