The Great Beauty
Rome is the beautiful and indifferent backdrop to the private dramas which unfold before the protagonist, Jep Gambardella, a laconic 65-year-old writer and journalist, played by Sorrentino's leading man of choice, Toni Servillo. Roman nobility, actors, fallen aristocrats, intellectuals, social climbers and high class criminals' personal stories come to life in the most beautiful villas, sumptuous apartments and verdant terraces of Rome, like a picturesque Babylon. Rome, as in many other films shot in the Italian capital, is a silent protagonist, brooding and beautiful, like a silent heroine.
