Kanya feels at home in the water. She’s a swimming champion with a promising career in sports. Her world collapses when she gets her first period and her family demands that she partake in a traditional Indian ritual that will complete her transition to womanhood. A swimming competition is planned for the same day, however, and Kanya has a mind of her own.

Meet the director

Apoorva Satish
Apoorva Satih is from Chennai, the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Her travels to Sri Lanka, Israel, Italy, Jordan, the Czech Republic, England and the United States informed her initial experiences as a director. In 2016, she was one of 20 young filmmakers selected to attend the International Filmmaking Academy in Bologna. With her graduation film, KANYA, she concluded her studies at the FAMU film school in Prague.
