Work can be a focus of one’s life if it’s challenging, fulfilling, or perhaps even so taxing that no other space can exist around it. Then it’s a helpful reminder of one’s own existence. Love is a similar thing, with its potential to be either invigorating or suffocating. A broken heart can mean having to go through a process of rediscovering oneself: with the help of close friends, perhaps, supported by the human pillars of a community of sufferers who share a secret, who are familiar with one and the same life. An old married couple even appear as two equal parts of a whole, unchanged by time, like the jazz music that represented freedom to many people in history.
