An Interview with the directors Jakub Jirásek , Jennifer Kolbe and Daood Alabdulaa

Meet the Filmmakers: WHITE ROOM, MILK and DRAWING FROM MEMORY

Describe your film in just one sentence.

Jakub Jirásek: WHITE ROOM is a short movie about what happens when you get locked in a completely white room.

Jennifer Kolbe: MILK is about how the conventional dairy industry works (on humans).

Daood Alabdulaa: DRAWING FROM MEMORY is about a beautiful childhood and a bad War.

If your film was an animal, what animal would it be?

Jakub Jirásek: A tiger in a zoo. Or maybe whatever animal in a zoo.

Jennifer Kolbe: (Dairy) COW – easy question.

Daood Alabdulaa: Elephant.

What was the best / funniest / worst thing that happened while shooting this movie?

Jakub Jirásek: We went to a kaolin quarry for the location scouting and Tomas, the DOP, almost drowned in it. At first it was just kind of funny because we knew we weren’t allowed to be there and there was just so much white mud sticking to our shoes, but soon it became really dangerous. The mud was slowly absorbing him, we were in the middle of nowhere and I could even get very close to him because I would also get stuck in the mud. Eventually we managed to save ourselves with some wooden sticks.

Jennifer Kolbe: Well, I animated it, and the best part is that I got to spend a lot of money on my sound designer, he did a great job!

What is your favorite movie quote of all time?

Jakub Jirásek: “Aspoň se něco děje, ne?” from the movie RIDE (1994) by Jan Svěrák. It means “At least something is happening, right?”

Jennifer Kolbe: “Do or do not. There is no try.” – Yoda in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980).

Daood Alabdulaa: “My mama always said, life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” – FORREST GUMP (1994).

Which filmmaker would you like to have a beer with?

Jakub Jirásek: I would love to have a beer with Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke.

Jennifer Kolbe: I would love a beer with Steve Cutts! His animations are great.

Daood Alabdulaa: 0% Alcohol Beer with Robert Zemeckis.

What was the first film you remember seeing at a movie theater?

Jakub Jirásek: I don’t remember. I would have to ask my parents.

Jennifer Kolbe: I think it was THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003) and I saw it in Chinese, so I didn't understand anything and slept half the time.

Daood Alabdulaa: WALL·E (2008).

What is your favorite party song?

Jakub Jirásek: Whatever song by Sean Paul, but I’m usually the only one to appreciate it.

Jennifer Kolbe: At the moment it’s „Only You“ by Frankie Francis Disco Jam Edit.

Daood Alabdulaa: “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be a…?

Jakub Jirásek: A farmer or an architect.

Jennifer Kolbe: I would be a chef and serving delicious vegan meals – but I do that anyways, haha.

Daood Alabdulaa: A Globetrotter.

Is this your first visit to Munich? What do you expect from the festival?

Jakub Jirásek: It’s my third time, but I’ve never spent more than one night in the city. I expect to meet a lot of young filmmakers, make new friends and see a lot of inspirative movies.

Jennifer Kolbe:  As a German I’ve been to Munich before! I expect super cool films, lovely people and a good time!

Daood Alabdulaa: I live in Munich. ;)

Jennifer Kolbe: MILK - Program 1

Jakub Jirásek: WHITE ROOM - Program 7
