Myanmar’s democratic government banned the mining of gemstones in 2019. But amid the turmoil of the ongoing civil war, lots of amateur prospectors continue to seek their fortune by digging for precious stones in hazardous conditions. One day, they hope, a big find will liberate them from a life of poverty.

Meet the director
May Myat Noe Aye
May Myat Noe Aye was born in Yangon in 1995. She studied German and business administration and was a research assistant for the Enlightened Myanmar Research Foundation prior to enrolling at the Yangon Film School in 2018. She has been involved in several of her fellow students’ films in various capacities. Her career as a director began with a portrait of Wareru, a well-known rapper from Mandalay. RUBY HUNTERS is her second documentary film.
