Who decides which films will receive the various awards at FILMSCHOOLFEST MUNICH 39 ½? This year’s international jury is made up of five members of the film industry. They watch the 50 films that are in competition and decide which of them to select. Today we’re announcing the first four members of the jury. Soon we’ll reveal who the jury chair will be.
Hungarian filmmaker Hajni Kis joins us from the world of film directing. She studied philosophy before turning to filmmaking. Her short film BEAUTIFUL FIGURE, which she made as part of her studies at the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest, was nominated for the Student Academy Award in 2016. Various other awards for her short films followed. In 2019 she received the VFF Young Talent Award for best film at FILMSCHOOLFEST MUNICH. She is currently working on her first feature film, WILD ROOTS, with funding from the Hungarian program for young filmmakers. The project received the Work in Progress Award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2020.
Approaching our international program from a film critic’s perspective is Bedatri Datta Choudhury. She majored in literature and film in New Delhi, followed by cinema studies at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York, where she has been living ever since. Her articles have been published by the Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Buzzfeed, MUBI Notebook, and Bitch magazine, among others. She has also collaborated with publishers, advertising agencies, documentary filmmakers, and theaters.
The third member of the group is film curator and project manager Emma Boa from Scotland. A former student of philosophy, she has been working at film festivals since 2003, including the BFI London Film Festival, the Reykjavik International Film Festival, and the Glasgow Film Festival, and held various positions at them before becoming a member of the programming team of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
We are pleased to welcome a further film curator, Faridah Gbadamosi from the United States, to the jury. She works at the OUTstream Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival, and the Coven Film Festival, among others. An author and a producer as well, she describes herself as “a pop culture-obsessed lover of film” and is committed to inclusion in the film industry.
We are delighted to once again have a jury that brings together so many different backgrounds from the world of film, and we are looking forward to hearing more from them.
