Meet the Filmmakers: WINGS OF THE SPIRIT

Interview with director Albert Meisl

Meet the Filmmakers: WINGS OF THE SPIRIT

Director Albert Meisl

What would be the teaser text for your film WINGS OF THE SPIRIT?

Two birds, two musicologists and one destroyed career.

Where does the inspiration for your film come from?

My friends and my own longterm studies definitely played a big part...

Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?

With Martin Scorsese, as he is not only one of the greatest filmmakers, but also a record collector, specialized in fifties Doo Wops. I would visit him and listen to records with him. No other people are needed, but if Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro came by, I wouldn't mind.

For which film would you like to shoot the sequel?

JACKIE BROWN by Quentin Tarantino

What is your favourite film - officially and secretly?

GROSSE FREIHEIT NR. 7 by Helmut Käutner - officially. OHNE KRIMI GEHT DIE MIMI NIE INS BETT by Franz Antel - secretly.

What was your favorite film festival experience so far?

The funniest expierence was when we got a special mention for a documentary film in Karlovy Vary. My editor and I were instructed to wear suits at the awards ceremony. Since we didn't have them with us - or owned suits at all - and also did not have much money left, we let the festival limousine drive us to a poor suburb to the cheapest clothes discounter in Karlovy Vary - under the sceptical gaze of our guest service member. Back in Austria we were asked less about the award than about the extremely inferior quality of our suits, which was clearly recognizable on the press photos.

Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?

Unfortunately: Gentrification, extremely high rents and the consistent destruction of niches and precarious forms of life.
