Meet the Filmmakers: WHEN THE PIGS FLY
Interview with director Leonardo Montenegro
Director Leonardo Montenegro
What would be the teaser text for your film WHEN THE PIGS FLY?
Benito, faced with a baffling new world, has to overcome his own anachronistic image in the quest of acceptance and social recognition. This will lead him to a journey far from his beloved town and he will discover that sometimes, life is ruled by chaos and luck.
Where does the inspiration for your film come from?
I've always been interested in the old age. Since I was a kid, my grandparents where always there for me. Growing up, I realized that they began to age faster and faster and suddenly, they became children again. As if their memories had taken over their bodies. This particular thought made me realize the difficulty of being old in these modern times. But elders don't give up, they're always trying to fit in. And seeing them doing so is just beautiful and sometimes funny. This film is a reflection of my particular point of view about this topic.
Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?
I would like to meet Alejandro González Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón and Sebastián Cordero. All of them are very important filmmakers in Latin America, so obviously, being Ecuadorian, it is very encouraging to seeing them doing so great in the film industry. I would love to make a really small and improvised shortfilm in one evening with them.
What's your favorite film quote?
"Ah Velvel, what a wife you have" - A SERIOUS MAN
What is your favourite film - officially and secretly?
My favourite film is AMORES PERROS by Alejandro González Iñarritu, and secretly THE FOX AND THE HOUND - just because it was the first movie I ever saw.
What was your favorite film festival experience so far?
This is one of my first festival experiences, but I really loved the "Festival la Orquidea" in my country, just because Francis Ford Coppola was there.
Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?
It reminds me of all the fairy tales I read when I was a child about happy towns, enchanted castles and fearless warriors defeating dragons.
