Meet the Filmmakers: UPPER LIP
Interview with director Shiri Cohen
Director Shiri Cohen
What would be the teaser text for your film UPPER LIP?
A young girl is having her eyebrows plucked for the first time.
Where does the inspiration for your film come from?
The inspiration for my film came from years of watching women go through painful cosmetic treatments and finally thinking it was all actually quite ridiculous, and was maybe worth discussing in a film.
Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Taika Waititi, Andrea Arnold - all filmmakers, I feel, that are very honest in their writing, which is important in our time. We are in a cat café! Talking about art and cuddling cats.
What's your favorite film quote?
"And so, if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians!" (Cher Horwitz, CLUESLESS (1995))
For which film would you like to shoot the sequel?
MATILDA (1996) by Danny DeVito
What is your favourite film - officially and secretly?
Officially - THE FLORIDA PROJECT (2017) by Sean Baker, secretly - KUNG FU HUSTLE (2004) by Stephen Chow
What was your favorite film festival experience so far?
Cinema south, Israel. It was the debut of the film in front of the cast, the crew, and my family and friends.
Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?
Princess "Sissi" (or: Elisabeth of Bavaria and Empress of Austria), whom I loved as a little girl and who was born in Munich.
