Interview with director Ian Lui

Meet the Filmmakers: THE HONGKONGERS

Director Ian Lui

What would be the teaser text for your film THE HONGKONGERS?

With the Hong Kong protests in the background, a reluctant grandson accompanies his grandfather to China to protect their ancestral lands from being reclaimed.

Where does the inspiration for your film come from?

I was inspired by the personal experiences of my granduncle, and the social movements in Hong Kong in the recent years.

Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?

Mr. Anthony Chen, Mr. Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit and Ms. Ann Hui. Because their films have inspired me a lot. I'd like to be their assistant in their workshop with actors and actresses, as I could learn a lot from them.

What's your favorite film quote?

"Beautiful things don't ask for attention." (Sean O'Connell in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY)

For which film would you like to shoot the sequel?

What is your favourite film - officially and secretly?

What was your favorite film festival experience so far?

I attended a film festival in Bosnia a few years ago, I had a great time with young European filmmakers.

Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?

A historical city with heritage and a unique culture.
