Meet the Filmmakers: PAPER BIRD
Interview with director Marie-Christine Roussel
Director Marie-Christine Roussel
What would be the teaser text for your film PAPER BIRD?
At 22 years old, Amélie-Jeanne is followed in psychiatry. Nearly one year after her fifth psychosis, she can still feel the aftermath. Fragile, but hopeful, her recovery is possible thanks to the unique relationship she has with her father, who is also facing his own challenges.
Where does the inspiration for your film come from?
At first, I wanted to do a film about a blind massage therapist to explore how we use our senses. That’s how I met Yves, the father of Amélie-Jeanne. I found out that he was not working anymore, but I fell in love with his personnality. After a few meetings, I met his daugther and they opened up about what she was going trought. I tought that doing a film about their relationship would be interesting since Yves was really important in Amélie's recovery.
Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?
I would definitely love to spend a night with Xavier Dolan, Meryl Streep and Michelle Obama. A Karaoke night with them would be nice!
What's your favorite film quote?
I don’t think I have one. It’s not a film quote but: "Pikachu I choose you!" summarizes my childhood.
For which film would you like to shoot the sequel?
HARRY POTTER without any doubt.
What was your favorite film festival experience so far?
I went to Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 2017. It was really amazing. I liked the concept of a tent village near the festival. I had such a great time there even if I could only attend for three days. Otherwise, my hearth belongs to the Festival Regard from Saguenay, QC Canada. It’s a short film festival from my hometown.
Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?
Beer? Or the nicest people in Germany. I mean, you can leave your bicycle on the street and nobody will steal it!
