Interview with director István Kovács

Meet the Filmmakers: A SIEGE

Director István Kovács

What would be the teaser text for your film A SIEGE?

A lonely woman's desperate journey in the war-torn Sarajevo to regain her feminine values and find humanity.

Where does the inspiration for your film come from?

I was born in Yugoslavia and I was there during the war and the whole Milosevic era. I always knew that I want to work with that period so when I heard a short memoir from my teacher, Gabor Nemeth, I immediately knew that this will be my next movie. The memoir was like 4-5 sentences long and it is the core of our story.

Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?

Robert Downey Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie. They're cool, we would have great time together.

What's your favorite film quote?

"Big Mac is a Big Mac, but they call it 'Le Big Mac'" ( Pulp Fiction)

What is your favourite film - officially and secretly?

Hard to choose one, but maybe: THE FIFTH SEAL by Zoltán Fábri.

What was your favorite film festival experience so far?

It's not a festival, but the Student Academy Awards was an amazing experience.

Keyword "Munich". What comes to your mind first?

Werner Herzog, Steven Spielberg and the German car industry.
