Interview with director Hadas Hechter

What would be the teaser text for your film THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS NOT HATE?
The documentary THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS NOT HATE is a moving and special collage of an accelerated maturation, death in the family and dark secrets. It's a poetic and daring movie about saying farewell to a complicated childhood and a departure into a new life.
Where does the inspiration for your film come from?
The inspiration for my film came from my first year of cinema studies. I was asked to direct a very short film from someone else's point of view. I chose my little brother and together we went to meet the man described in my recent movie THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS NOT HATE. We couldn't even enter the place where he works, that was strange and difficult. So I figured, the only way to really understand this story is by making a film about this topic. I feel like my main reason to study filmmaking is a spiritual and emotional one.
Which three people from film and television would you like to spend an evening with? Why? And what are you doing?
Gaspar Noé: His movie ENTER THE VOID changed my life. I feel like it made me understand the magic of cinema, like I was experiencing a great vision of somebody else. I wanted to try and direct movies, too. I would love to meet him on a boat, floating in the middle of the sea, watching the waves and speaking of the present.
Jim Carrey: I feel he has the most interesting point of view on life and would be thankful to spend an evening with him. Walking the streets of New York (or Jaffa), hand in hand like two old friends. His opinions on things for sure would be of great benefit for me as a creator and as a woman in this world.
Miranda July: I first became aware of her when I saw her film ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW. I think I fell in love with her. After that I saw other films she made and watched this one again and again. I'm inspired by her and I'm sure it would be much fun to spend some time in nature or go to a museum with her.
What's your favorite film quote?
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND - Clementine Kruczynski: "Too many guys think I'm a concept, or I complete them, or I'm gonna make them alive. But I'm just a fucked-up girl who's lookin' for my own peace of mind; don't assign me yours."
