Meet the Filmmakers: WAITING TIME

Interview with director Clara Stern

Meet the Filmmakers: WAITING TIME

Director Clara Stern

Describe your film WAITING TIME in three words.

Night, Alone, Harassment

Which film was the first to deeply impress you?

As a child I was impressed by the screen adaptations of books by Astrid Lindgren. Especially RONIA, THE ROBBER'S DAUGHTER and DIE BRÜDER LÖWENHERZ - I just had to watch them several times. I was amazed by the strong feelings a film could provoke: fear, sadness, freedom. And of course laughter and the feeling of being in love.

Which actor or actress would you love to work with and why?

I am fascinated by actors and actresses, who - as I put it - act under the surface. When you watch them act, you get the feeling that you are able to see, what is happening right under their skin. Without them putting the subtext in their gestures. Andrew Garfield does that. Carey Muligan. And Franz Rogowski, too.

If your film was an animal, what animal would it be?

I don't think, the entire film would be some kind of animal. But the main character, she is, hmm, kind of like a fox. A wild fox, roaming the streets at night. It is able to defend itself, but still - there are animals stronger than the fox.

What do your grandparents think you do as a job?

One of my grandmothers understands very well, what I do. She watches my films, discusses actors and actresses with me, she has always been interested in art and went to the theatre a lot. My other grandmother keeps asking me, why she doesn't see me on television more often.

What would you be if you weren’t a filmmaker?

When I am not working as a filmmaker, I do work as a presenter. It is a lot of fun and each time is - just like filmmaking - a challenge: different topics, people, events, places.

Is this your first visit to Munich? What do you expect from the festival?

I have been to Munich eight years ago - for two days. I can barely remember. Most of all, I expect to get to know interesting filmmakers and get into discussion with them. And of course, to get to see good films.
