Meet the Filmmakers: THEIR VOICES

Interview with director Eri Mizutani

Director Eri Mizutani

Describe your film THEIR VOICES in three words.

Childhood, joy, together

Which film was the first to deeply impress you?

The first film which really had a major impact on my life was VAMPYR by Carl Theodor Dreyer. While I watched many movies before, they were mostly commercial ones. I watched this one in a cinema with live music being played. I was very impressed by it and the live music made me realize that films were more than sheer entertainment, it pushed me to look for more.

Which actor or actress would you love to work with and why?

If I only could, I would love to work with Charlotte Rampling. As I was looking for an actress for my short-feature, I was looking for someone who would remind me of her in UNDER THE SAND by Francois Ozon. Under an apparent distance and her cold beauty, she expresses delicate feelings and each little reaction of hers moved me very much.

If your film was an animal, what animal would it be?

It is a difficult question. I would say that if my film was an animal, it would be a ladybug. Though it is an insect, it is always nice to see one and it brings you luck.

What do your grandparents think you do as a job?

I come from Japan, from a very traditional family. Coming to Europe and at my age still looking for adventures and actors is completely out of this world. Fortunately, they don't try to change me anymore. While they do watch my films, they never understand them. Maybe one day it will change.

What would you be if you weren’t a filmmaker?

If I wasn't a filmmaker, I guess I would be trying my luck as a painter. I finished Fine Arts studies in Japan and it would have been a logical continuation.

Is this your first visit to Munich? What do you expect from the festival?

It will be my first time in Munich, I don't really know yet what to expect, except maybe good beers, vivid conversations and good films.
