Meet the Filmmakers: CREATING A MONSTER
Interview with director Gena Lida Riess
Director Gena Lida Riess
Describe your film CREATING A MONSTER in three words.
Construction, audience, Schadenfreude.
Which film was the first to deeply impress you?
AMERICAN BEAUTY. I can't help but think this is a pretty uninteresting choice... but I can't lie. I remember thinking it was so profound; the approach to life, the multi-character storylines and the philosophical meditative narration. I also had a massive crush on Mena Suvari, so that helped.
If your film was an animal, what animal would it be?
A shark. Because they are widely misunderstood and pre-judged - which is a theme in my film.

What would you be if you weren’t a filmmaker?
I have always been drawn to social work or psychology. I like to think I will do one of these professions one day!
Is this your first visit to Munich? What do you expect from the festival?
It is my first time visiting Munich. I have heard amazing things about the festival, so I expect to meet great people and have a fun time. However my tactic in life is to never have too high expectations of anything - so I never feel disappointment. That may sound silly, but it helps me with managing my expectations.
