Meet the Filmmakers: BERLIN TROIKA
Interview with director Andrej Gontcharov
Director Andrej Gontcharov
What is the original idea of your film BERLIN TROIKA – how did it all start?
I used to do a little interpreting myself and I thought it’s a profession that has not been explored nearly enough cinematically. In hindsight, maybe that’s because it’s a nightmare to shoot and edit dialogue that way.
What was your highlight during the process of filmmaking?
Truth be told, the biggest sudden rush came when we did the special effect of the chair cracking. We had only one shot to get it right and then it worked out better than we could have imagined. On a deeper level, screening the film for the first time to a festival audience in Los Angeles was incredible: Even though I was in a different part of the world, they reacted to every beat and it felt like all the little details we laboured over were worth the effort.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be…?
Waiting for retirement.
Is it your first time in Munich? What do you expect of the city and the festival?
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend as I’ll be in Russia working on my next project. I wish everyone a great time!
