Meet the Filmmakers: ONE NIGHT IN JAFFA

Interview with director Raz Bar David Varon

Meet the Filmmakers: ONE NIGHT IN JAFFA

Director Raz Bar David Varo

What is the teaser text for your film ONE NIGHT IN JAFFA?

Laila is a young transgender woman who lives with her mother in Jaffa, mixed city of Jews and Arabs. She is going out to find some human interaction, but the reality outside is not the same as in her fantasy.

What is the original idea of your film – how did it all start?

I really wanted to make a film about a story that happened to my friend when I slept over at her place. She was date-raped while I was sleeping there and I only found out the next morning... This matter, and knowing that this happened to a lot of my female friends was keeping my mind busy. These cases are almost never shown in films and I wanted to bring it to screen. When I tried to create my heroine for the film, I felt that she had to be a transgender woman - so that her femininity is part of her struggle, kind of like me.

What was your highlight during the process of filmmaking?

Telling other people what to do. To feel for a short while that all of the misery and suffering of the world means something because they are on screen.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be…?

Maybe a waitress, maybe a peace activist, probably a student forever.

Is it your first time in Munich? What do you expect of the city and the festival?

Yes, it is. I expect that I will find some vegan food. I love eating very much and I heard a rumor, that Munich is not very vegan-friendly. Also, I expect to see some great films and meet other young and interesting directors.
