HARVESTING OUR TEA
The idyllic scenery of the foggy tea fields in northeastern Turkey is deceptive: the women toiling here have done so since early childhood, without being paid. For the longest time, they didn’t have any real alternative, but a new generation of emancipated young women is now leaving the countryside to pursue an education. While traditionalists fear for the future of this ancient occupation, a cooperative is fighting for equal rights and fair wages — for women, too, and especially for them.
