“An Outsider on Its Way to the Oscars”: A Case Study of THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE with Producer Ingo Fliess

The production and distribution of THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE illustrate all too well the fallibility of the industry. This film was misjudged or underestimated since its earliest stage of development. The makers had to defend their concept all the more — and hope that at some point the penny would drop and the film would have the effect they had hoped for. THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE by director İlker Çatak not only earned the German Film Award in no fewer than five categories, including for best feature film, but was also recently selected as the official German entry for best international feature film for the 2024 Academy Awards. Ingo Fliess, producer of THE TEACHERS’ LOUNGE and founder and managing director of the production company if... Productions, will talk to the audience about this success story and a possible (outside) chance at the Oscars during our master class on Friday.
