NEW BEGINNING
Chile, 1973: Democratically elected socialist president Salvador Allende is ousted in a coup by General Pinochet. A brutal military dictatorship ensues. Some of Allende’s persecuted supporters are granted asylum in East Germany. Luis is one of them. He leads a happy life with his German wife and their daughter up to the point when everything changes again in 1988. The toppling of the regime in Chile makes him a citizen of a capitalist country, and he loses his status as a refugee. When he is also suspected of having helped a co-worker escape to West Berlin, the situation escalates.
