Meet the Filmmakers: HUNGER

Interview mit Regisseur Amit Tzarfati

Meet the Filmmakers: HUNGER

Regisseur Amit Tzarfati

What is the teaser text for your film HUNGER?

At midnight Eli celebrates his 49th birthday. Alone he sits in his car in the dark, eats his supper and makes the regular call to his favorite radio show. Suddenly he spots a young girl in an intimate situation. Their eyes lock, from that moment on Eli will do anything to see her again.

What is the original idea of your film – how did it all start?

It all started with my will to tell a story about a person who is used to live his life like as if he is invisible. A man who lives a meaningless life. And to see, if a person like that can break his boundaries, and by doing so, how far his urges can make him go. The starting point of the script was a scene with a young couple making out on his vehicle while he's sitting inside. When his eyes and hers meet during the sexual act, he feels something he never felt before. As if the girl is showing him, how to celebrate life and not be invisible. The general idea was to tell a story about a meeting between two different people seeking the same thing - contact.

What was your highlight during the process of filmmaking?

I think the highlight during the shooting was directing the last scene. The driving scene. It was a long and complicated scene in the script, a lot of dialogue and complex shooting. We didn't have enough time for that. The pressure of the time schedule forced me to come up with a simple moment that changed the script, but this moment was much more suitable for the characters journey. That rare enlightenment during the shooting was the highlight for me.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be…?

I guess I would be a musician. I've neglected making music years ago in order to pursue my dream to become a filmmaker. Now music is just a hobby.

Is it your first time in Munich? What do you expect of the city and the festival?

This will be my first time in Munich but not in Germany. I'm looking forward to meet filmmakers from around the world. To share ideas and to combine the pleasure and the culture Munich has to offer.
