Meet the Filmmakers: GAZLAN

Interview mit Regisseur Tomer Lahmy

Meet the Filmmakers: GAZLAN

Regisseur Tomer Lahmy

What is the original idea of your film GAZLAN – how did it all start?

Well... several things combined together to one. The first was a song I wrote about life melting like sweet icecream. The second is my old miserable car that used to get stuck at least once a week. So when I came back home one day after fixing my car I read that song randomly and the very first idea for the film came to my mind. The original idea was to make the GAZLAN (the ice cream man) drive and get stuck in the Israeli desert where he meets different characters (a prostitue, an IRS man, an african refugee, a bedouin, a unit of soldiers) at the end I thought about what will be the best metaphore for the film and I chose to stay with the character of John (the Sudanic refugee) and the soldier.

What was your highlight during the process of filmmaking?

The highlight of making the film was to meet with Hammis Elsheick (the Sudanic refugee) and to learn about his real story (he is a Sudanic refugee in real life), to be amazed by his acting abilities and the way he learned his text and his character. Another highlight was to shoot the film in the Israeli desert, to watch the never ending amount of stars at night and then to wake up to an orange desert lighted by the sunrise and to go and shoot the film.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be…?

A shepherd.

Is it your first time in Munich? What do you expect of the city and the festival?

I expect it to be very hospitable but unfortunately I won't be able to make it there because I'm travelling in Africa for the next six months.
