Meet the filmmakers 2014: INTO THE SILENT SEA Regisseur Andrej Landin

Describe your film INTO THE SILENT SEA in one sentence.
Under desperate circumstances, and across vast distances, an intense connection is made.

What's the idea behind the film?
The first inspiration to make this film was a song called "Yulia" by the band Wolf Parade. A beautiful and poetic song about the solitude of space. Which basically became the idea behind the film; to make a beautiful and poetic film about solitude and the fate of one man experiencing the ultimate definition of solitude.

Is it your first time in Munich and/or Germany?
I was in Germany 2006 to experience the World Cup. But it is my first time in Munich.

What do you expect of Munich? What are you most looking forward to?
I expect to meet lots of talented filmmakers. I expect interesting conversations, good movies and lots of beer and wine.

What is your favourite movie and who's your favourite director?
I have a couple of favorite movies; The Godfather, Silence of the Lambs, Apocalypse Now and basically everything from Terrence Malick. Who is then of course my favorite director.

Why did you want to become a filmmaker?
When I saw Star Wars for the first time. I was probably about 7 years old at the time and have very strong memories from that first screening. It was like someone kicked open the door to my imagination.

Who would you like to work with?
There are so many. In terms of actors; Al Pacino, Cate Blanchett, Michael Caine, Jessica Chastain, Christian Bale and many more. I'd like to make a film sometime with cinematographers Emmanuel Lubezki, John Toll and Vito Storaro. It would also be fun to hang out with Terrence Malick on set, and maybe Francis and Sophia Coppola.

If you weren't a filmmaker, you'd be…?
A writer. I think I would withdraw to some reclusive part of Sweden and write novels during the winters and then spend my summers drinking mojitos in Cuba.
