HKBU – China

Hong Kong Baptist University started the first film and television course in Hong Kong as early as the seventies, and has continued to aim for high standards in teaching, facilities and curriculum up to the present day. In the late 1970s, besides offering production classes, the University created classes in cinema studies for students to nourish their critical, historical, and aesthetic perspectives; and in the mid-1980s, it established the first digital graphics laboratory among Hong Kong tertiary institutions, which subsequently developed into one of the options for undergraduate studies in the School of Communication. The Department of Cinema and Television was formally established in 1992. In the same year, The BSocSc (Hons) in communication degree was offered. A few years later, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, focusing on cinema and television studies, were launched. In 2004, the first Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Film, Television and Digital Media in the Greater China Region was also established. In 2009, MA in Television Communication Management will be launched with Peaking University.
To cope with the rapid development of media culture in the Greater China Region, Hong Kong Baptist University established the Academy of Film in June 2009, which will offer, besides the programmes mentioned above, five Professional Higher Diploma programmes in the future three years.
