UFF – Brazil

The Department of Cinema and Video at UFF, Brazil, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, was created in 1968 by Brazilian film director Nelson Pereira dos Santos and is a part of IACS – Art and Social Comunication Institute of UFF – Universidade Federal Fluminense.

The Department has a four year program of studies which includes the humanistic, artistic and theoretical aspects of the medium as well as technical skills.

Studies are organized in Humanities (Philosophy, Sociology, History and Anthropology), Arts (Art History and Aesthetics), Theory and Cinema History (Theory and Language, International and Brazilian Cinema, Forms of Narrative) and Audiovisual and Cinema Technology (Photography, Lighting, Screenwriting, Production, Editing, Directing, Animation, Cinema Rights and Film Preservation).

The Department of Cinema and Video at UFF charges no fees. Students can enroll by passing the Brazilian “Vestibular” examination. Since its inception, students work as crew members of other students' productions. The department has already produced 200 films and received 120 prizes in international and Brazilian festivals, including the Koenig Ludwig Trophy - awarded to Marina Pompeu and Daniel Hernandez for their commercial, Make Your Uvula Happy (Faça Sua Uvula Feliz) - at the 26th Munich International Festival of Film Schools.
