Escola de Belas-Artes da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte
The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) offers 75 undergraduate programs to 24,552 students in all areas of knowledge. Most courses are offered in Belo Horizonte at 20 academic units.
The School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (EBA) arose from a decision of the Congregation of the UFMG School of Architecture in 1957, to create a fine arts program. In 1968 the program was formally constituted and in the early 1970’s it went on to become an academic unit within the UFMG structure. Inside the Fine Arts program there are five different options for students: Film Animation, Graphic Arts, Sculpting, Etching, and Painting. The school also offers Fashion Design, Drama, Dance, and Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Goods.
In the 1980’s, an agreement was made between the Technical Center for Audiovisual (CTAv) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), which resulted in the formation of an Animation Center, composed of students and professors of the department. Shortly thereafter, the degree in Animation was added in the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the only one in Brazil until 2000 - an important step in the growth of the School of Fine Arts’ Cinema focus.
Since then, Film Animation has been the choice of almost half of the graduates in the Fine Arts (now called Visual Arts). It became evident that there was a need to expand the area of Animation in response to the new artistic and technological horizon. So in September 2007, the Board of the Photography, Theater, and Cinema Department proposed the creation of the Film Animation and Digital Arts (CAAD) course, also in the School of Fine Arts, UFMG.
