| Alexander Reissl, SPD whip of the City Council, officially opened the 2009 MUNICH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF FILM SCHOOLS on Sunday evening in the ARRI cinema |
|
| The atmosphere was casual and the visiting film students and their professors from around the world were treated to a crash course in German titles, names and protocol, which they seemed to find quite amusing. They were welcomed by Andreas Ströhl, the executive director of the Internationale Münchner Filmwochen GmbH, the Artistic Director of the Festival, Prof. Andreas Gruber of the Munich University for Television and Film, and the Chairman of the IMF Supervisory Board, Bavarian Finance Minister Georg Fahrenschon. Fahrenschon pointed out that other students had sat in those same seats in previous years and many had gone on to achieve international acclaim. He wished all present success and told them they must be doing something right otherwise their films would not have been selected for competition. Prof. Gruber pointed out that the festival was the largest of its kind in the world. The opening night film, DESPERADOS ON THE BLOCK, a film by a Munich film student about students in a student housing complex, followed and the crowd moved to the Max-Emanuel Brauerei afterwards to celebrate until well after midnight.
